Types of counselling

People come to counselling for many different reasons, some to offload and share, some want answers to things that are happening and some are looking for strategies to support themselves.  In your counselling sessions I can draw on various types of counselling to support you.  Some clients know the type of counselling they want, others are not aware there are different types.  I find most want a Person Centred approach and for me to use elements from others if they need help to organise their thoughts or to get to where they want to be.  Either way, be assured it is your session and you have the control.

Person Centred

Person Centred counselling is the counselling most people are familiar with.  As client you control the session, and you decide what you need/want to talk about.  As counsellor, I will help you support you in exploring the issue and problem solve with you.  By me taking a non-directive approach it will promote personal growth, self-awareness, self-esteem, and self-understanding.

Gestalt

Gestalt counselling concentrates on the here and now and a person’s present life and challenges, it does not delve into past experiences.  It is based on the idea if someone can have a greater awareness of their here and now it can help them make healthier choices in the future.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

CBT is a structured and goal orientated type of counselling.  The counsellor will lead sessions which will examine a person’s thoughts, emotions and behaviours which keeps the client in their vicious cycle.  Through structured sessions and homework, those overwhelming problems are broken down into more manageable parts and tackled one at a time.  CBT can help with eating disorders, panic attacks, anxiety, anger, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and many more.

Neuro Linguistic Programming

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a psychological approach that explores the connection between three key elements:

  1. Neuro – your brain and nervous system (how you experience the world through your senses.
  2. Linguistic – the language you use (how you communicate with yourself and others), and
  3. Programming – the patterns of behavior and thought (how you organize your ideas and actions to get results).

Basically, NLP is about understanding how people think, speak, and behave in order to improve communication, change habits, and achieve goals more effectively.

Emotional Literacy Support £60 for 50 minutes

Emotional literacy is having the skills and the knowledge to express emotions and feelings using speech and other forms of communication. It's a skill most develop from a young age to help establish a stable relationship with emotions.

Emotional literacy is key in dealing with emotions. It focuses on how we communicate our feelings and how well we can read others' emotions. Whilst some children and adults will naturally be comfortable doing this, others might need support. Without emotional literacy, children and adults alike will struggle to express their feelings appropriately and might be confused or alarmed by the emotions of others.  Emotional literacy work is target driven and directive and does not address/explore feelings in the same context as counselling.
